On a recent trip to Las Vegas I decided I’d try playing some blackjack over at the Palms. I was able to find a two deck hand-held game that paid 3:2 on Blackjack, for $25 minimum hands. They had some other games that were 6-deck shoe games with surrender. I bought in for $1,000 and started playing, and a pit boss came over and asked if I had a player’s card. It was my first time to play there and so I gave him my ID and he made a new player’s card for me, then we chatted a bit and he gave me a comp ticket for the 24/7 Cafe. The attractive young dealers were very knowledgeable and fun to play blackjack with. I was very impressed with the service players get at the Palms.
I played for a while that day but just could not get ahead, and basically after a couple of hours of Blackjack I ended up with the same $1,000 that I started with. No profit, no loss. Well at least I got a meal comped and I didn’t *lose* money! Hungry, I took my comp ticket and went to the 24/7 Cafe.
I was pleasantly suprised to see an extensive menu including Chinese food, steaks, eggs, sandwiches, desserts.
I decided on the Mongolian Beef, which was served with a plate of fried wontons and various sauces to try. The meal was superb and the sauces very tasty, ranging from mustard sauce, a sweet/sour sauce, to super-spicy red-pepper sauce. Overall, just delicious, good Chinese food. The presentation was very nice, the cafe has a nice interior with big wide-screen TV’s about the place and the portions were very generous. The service was fast and efficient, and the waitress noticed how thirsty I was and brought me a whole pitcher of iced tea, which I thought was very nice.
The Palms is a great casino property, and playing there is fun and low-pressure, not a lot of heat coming down on you if you vary your bets widely, and friendly and knowledgeable dealers and pit personnel. The environment is very stylish and pleasant. And now I know, that for a good meal, quickly prepared and served at a good price (Mongolian Beef = $9.99!) you can rely on the 24/7 Cafe in the Palms for surprisingly good Chinese food. I will definitely go there again, comped or not!
