You can download and play the UBT version of tournament blackjack for free. Entry level tournaments are free, and if you win there, you gain an a Tournament Entry Chip (TEC) that allows you to play in daily (several times per day, actually) 5 round elimination tournaments. If you get to the 5th round there, as I have done, you have an entry into a finals tournament held once per month.
The winner of that tournament gets a FREE TRIP to the next televised UBT tournament and gets to play on TV against the pros!
Now this is tournament blackjack and not regular you vs. the dealer type blackjack. So there are some differences, number one being that it is elimination blackjack. Every 8th hand out of the 30 hands in the tournament, the player with the lowest chip count is eliminated from the tournament. If more than one player makes it to the final hand, which is hand 30, then it’s heads up and whoever has the most chips at the end of the hand wins the tournament. This makes for some very exciting play and players here take much greater risks than in ordinary casino blackjack. In fact tournament play can show you a whole different way to look at the game of blackjack.
As I explain in a “Bad Beats” section of Larry’s Las Vegas, I was once beaten in the upper rounds of UBT tournament by a guy who doubled down on a 16 vs. a dealer 10! The dealer had 20, I had 19, and I’ll be darned if my opponent didn’t come up with a 5 to win the tournament with a 21!
Since there are a limited number of hands, 30 in all, to score, you’re not really playing for the long, long haul all the time, as you do when playing casino blackjack over a lifetime of trips and play. With the UBT tournaments, it’s often “Go Big, or Go Home!
However, make no mistake, your intimate knowledge of Basic Strategy, as we will teach you here at Larry’s Las Vegas and our other sites, is your entire basis for play. Even when you deviate from BS, it’s vital to know you are deviating, and why, and at least have some approximation of the odds you are dealing with.
